A brief respite from feltmaking

At this time of year, I have a little breathing room without the steady drumbeat of doing art shows. It is so much fun for me to learn something new, so this week I will be venturing into the realm of leather work. I will be taking a class at The Chicago School of Shoemaking. I would love to make a pair of shoes, but will start out with the leather jewelry class. Looking forward to meeting my teacher, Sara, who has been making shoes for 36 years!

Last year at this time, I signed up to take a basket weaving class at Terra Incognito in Oak Park, IL. The teacher was Karen Gubitz, an amazing fiber artist. She was a wonderfully supportive and inspiring teacher. Under her close tutelage I made my very first hand-woven basket.

Because Karen is such an adventurous creator, she inspired me to use a piece of felt that I had been saving for quite a while. It was a long twisty rope of felt that I had sewn and crocheted for a purse handle, but wasn’t able to use. I love it here.

In 2011, her home was featured in the Oak Park Holiday House walk. I was so inspired by the photos of her home and work. You can see them on her facebook page

Where are the fingerless gloves?

I love meeting people at art and craft shows and I’m thrilled that you are interested in my work.

You probably have already heard my apology when you asked if I sell online, but I truly am sorry that my online stores do not carry much inventory. I hope to remedy that once my show season is over. Probably not til January.

I am doing so many shows this year that I hope that you can come to another one, when you are ready to buy. If not please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to work with you.

Why would you wear fingerless gloves?

One of my most popular sellers is my fingerless gloves! I get a couple of different reactions when people see them for the first time. They love them and are excited to see them and try them on right away! Or they say: “Why would you wear fingerless gloves? I need the fingers, my fingers get cold!”

So I thought I would answer this last question here. The answer that I usually give is that you need fingerless gloves anytime you need to work outside and use your hands. Especially in the Spring and Fall, not so much in the winter. Some people wear them under waterproof mittens or over leather gloves.

So I thought I would create a list of people, professions or reasons why you would wear fingerless gloves:

Vendors (like me) who do many many outdoor shows
Photographers
Musicians
Marching Band members
Smokers
Soccer Moms
Moms with small children
Motorcycle passengers
Bicyclist
Skier
Walker
Driver
works indoors in a cold environment (I do!)
works at home and keeps the thermostat done (Yeah!)
Gets cold easily
Cashier
Arthritic hands

And last but not least– you are addicted to your cell phone!
